Different DLs in India In India, three main kinds of licences are given out:
1. learner's permit
2. a perpetual licence
3. Commercial Driver's Permit

Learner's permit: Before issuing the applicant a permanent driving licence, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) issues a learner's licence. It's good for a maximum of six months. The applicant must present legitimate documentation to the RTO and pass a brief test in order to obtain this licence. The applicant is expected to improve his driving abilities over the course of six months. The applicant can extend his learning permit if he still lacks confidence behind the wheel.

A perpetual licence: If the applicant passes the eligibility requirements, the RTA provides a permanent driving licence following the expiration of the learner's permit period. According to the requirements, the candidate must be 18 years old and pass the driving exam. In the event that he fails the driving exam, he has seven days to retake it.

License for commercial driving: This commercial driver's licence is only given to people who operate heavy vehicles, such delivery vans and trucks. The requirements for this are that the applicant be at least 18 years old (some states maintain a minimum age of 20), receive training in a government training facility or a facility affiliated with the government, have completed their education up to the eighth grade, have valid identification, and already hold a learner's permit.
