Using information and communication technologies, the e-District initiative aims to "strengthen the District administration to deliver government services to the residents in a streamlined, transparent, and convenient manner." Government of Sikkim has identified the services for e-enablement in all of the state's districts, which are discussed in the following parts, in order to fulfil its mission.

Additionally, Sikkim is close to Bangladesh and the Siliguri corridor in India.

According to per capita income, Sikkim is the third-richest state in India (after Chandigarh and Delhi). It has India's seventh-highest literacy rate.

The sharpest decrease in poverty rates has been seen in Sikkim. According to the Planning Commission, from 2001 to 2012, there were 70% fewer poor people. Sikkim has the lowest percentage of people living in poverty nationwide.
